Motor Vehicle Accidents

From car to motorcycle accidents, spinal cord injuries caused in any kind of motor vehicle account for over 50% of all new spinal cord injuries.

Falls

There are many kinds of falls that can cause paralysis. A fall from a balcony to a fall in the shower can damage the spinal cord. For anyone over the age of 65, falls are the most common cause of spinal cord injury. In general, 31% of spinal cord injuries are caused by a fall.

Acts of Violence

Gunshot wounds are the main act of violence considered in this category (knife attacks can cause paralysis as well) and account for 13% of all spinal cord injuries.

Sports/Recreation

Many different kinds of sports and recreational activities can cause spinal cord injuries, such as diving, football, hockey or gymnastics. These kinds of injuries account for approximately 10% of spinal cord injuries.

Disease

Several different kinds of diseases can cause paralysis. One of the most common is cancer, followed by any kind of injury to the vertebrae like arthritis or osteoporosis. Inflammation of the spinal cord can also cause paralysis.

And lastly, it’s important to know that alcohol use is a factor in many spinal cord injuries. 1 out of every 4 spinal cord injuries has alcohol considered as a factor.
