I posted a video a few months ago showing you how I take advantage of my leg spasms to stand. That's the upside of the leg spasm I have. In this video I show how at times my leg spasms and be at a disadvantage. When I was finishing up my cardio ready to transfer to my wheelchair both my legs kicked into locked spasms. Both legs shot forward locked out in leg spasms which thrusted my upper body backwards almost causing me to fall off the rowing machine. Luckily I was able to keep my balance when the leg spasms kicked in and not fall. To calm my leg spasms I first waited for the leg spasms to subside which they generally do for me. Then I made sure I had regained my balance then I leaned over my legs to apply pressure to fully disengage my leg spasms and I also put one arm under both legs to lift my feet up off the ground. You see at times when the balls of my feet hit the ground that will activate my leg spasms as well. This was a close call. At times my leg spasms will kick in without any notice such as in this video and topple me over or kick something which has in the past injured my feet. For example in my house I don't wear footwear my leg spasms have kicked out and I've kicked underneath the bathroom/kitchen cupboards which have cut open or bruised my feet.
Medication to help Leg spasms - spasticity
Now to help reduce my leg spasms and overall spasticity I take a medication called Baclofen. Baclofen is a prescribed medication which is used to help relax certain muscles in your body. It relieves the spasms, cramping, and tightness of muscles caused by medical problems, such as multiple sclerosis or certain injuries to the spine.
About me :)
Twenty three years ago I suffered a spinal cord injury on a cold dark November night. It was diagnosed I had a T-12 incomplete compressional fracture. Since day one of my accident I have had and continue to have an enormous amount of support from my family, friends and community. Once becoming completely independent, bound to a wheelchair I always enjoyed giving back. Whether it was visiting schools, community organizations public speaking, demonstrating sports, visiting newly injured spinal cord patients, helping with non-profit organizations helping people is what I love to do. That is why I decided to start ParaLife TV. In today's world as we all know public gatherings, in my neck of the woods anyway have been basically shut down. ParaLife TV is a way for me to continue to help. Through YouTube I am able show people day to day experiences, how I have adapted to life in a wheelchair and share what our community has to offer.
