Simon Shaw is paralysed from the neck down after a car accident in 1984 when he was just 16.
In Episode 1of his podcast, Simon tells us about his early years in Brixton, south London. He comes from a Jamaican family; his Mum was tough, he says, 'a mini Mike Tyson'. Simon, by his own admission, was a bit of a tearaway, playing truant, smoking, drinking and chasing girls. He was an outstanding hip hop dancer. He describes in detail the day of the accident.
Four boys, a stolen car, not much sleep. It was a recipe for disaster.
Simon was the only boy to be seriously injured. The other three had cuts and bruises.
Simon is joined by Kirk, or Captain, as he's known, his best friend, who was in the car with him that fateful day in August 1984. They recount That Day and reflect on how their friendship has lasted. Kirk is dismayed by the attitude many have to people with disabilities. It's clear from their conversation how close Simon and Kirk are.
