KAFOs— knee ankle foot orthosis— are leg braces that aid paraplegics to walk after sustaining their spinal cord injury. Although leg braces cannot be worn all day, they help retrain the spinal cord how to walk and can aid in SCI recovery that way. There’s many other health benefits with consistent use of leg braces, including increasing bone density and muscle, and preventing skin, bone, and joint issues, as well as decreasing blood pooling in our lower limbs. Overall, it’s beneficial to use leg braces shortly after sustaining a spinal cord injury, as recovery can be somewhat time sensitive. But be sure to avoid the mistakes I made when making my KAFOs, such as choosing the wrong lock and not designing them to fit inside my shoes.
As a disclaimer, I am not a doctor. I am just speaking from my own personal experiences as a complete T11 and T12 paraplegic who has been using leg braces to walk for about 2 months now. I also don’t want to oversimplify walking after SCI because recovery in general is very complicated. There’s not a simple answer of “how to walk as a paraplegic,” but this is a valid option!
Thank you for being patient with me as I am learning how to use youtube and this new paralyzed body at the same time! :)
