I have been a quadriplegic since January 19, 2015.
I was injured in a car accident on January 19, 2015, halfway through my senior year of high school and on the Academic Honors track. I was driving a 2005 Mitsubishi Montero (Mini SUV) along with a friend who luckily did not sustain as many injuries as myself and is back to normal by now. We were on a country road that we had never been on before. The road we were on was blacktopped, slightly going uphill for about a mile. At the top of the hill was a four-way with no stop signs. We went straight, which transitioned into gravel and went downhill after the intersection. I lost control and hit an embankment. I was ejected out of the car because we were not wearing our seatbelts. I was told that I was lucky that I was not wearing my seatbelt because I was 6'2" at the time and would have more than likely been injured worse or not even be here. I was found 96' from where my car stopped rolling. I fractured my left shin, broke my left femur, left collarbone, both jaws, palate of my mouth, top six front teeth, cracked skull, traumatic brain injury, and C5, C6, and C7 vertebrae in my neck, leaving me a quadriplegic and paralyzed from the neck down. I was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and was then life-lined to Eskenazi. I was there for 30 days and was then taken to RHI to do rehab for 29 days, totaling 59 days away from home.
